About this journal

About this journal

Kustljus means “coastal light” in Swedish. This is a small, non-commercial journal about one stretch of the Swedish west coast — roughly from Falkenberg north to Varberg — and about the weather that shapes it.

There is nothing for sale here, no newsletter and no tracking. The notes are written slowly and published when there is something worth saying: a beach in an unusual week, a river after heavy rain, the way the light behaves in December.

What the journal covers

  • Beaches and dunes outside the summer season
  • The rivers that run into the Kattegat, above all the Ätran
  • Lighthouses, harbours and rocky points
  • Practical notes on walking the coast in wind, fog and short days

Photographs

The photographs on this site come from Unsplash and are used under the Unsplash License. They were chosen because they show the kind of landscape the notes describe — sandy beaches, dune grass, low rock and grey water — not because they were taken at the exact places mentioned in the text.

Getting around

Falkenberg and Varberg both sit on the West Coast Line between Gothenburg and Malmö, and most of the places in the journal can be reached from the stations on foot or by bike. Opening times, nature-reserve rules and bird-nesting closures change from year to year, so check the local municipality’s pages before you go.
